Cooper's Word Salad Response To Shutdown Is Disqualifying
The longest shutdown of the United States Federal Government is coming to an end, and Senate candidate former Governor Roy Cooper still refuses to issue a clear statement on how he would vote on the government shutdown. North Carolinians deserve to know how Cooper would vote if he were elected. But instead, Cooper issues statements full of platitudes but devoid of substance.
Recap: Senate Democrats declined to vote for a continuing resolution that simply extended government funding first approved under the Biden administration. Democrats issued a series of poison pill demands, like enabling taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants, while refusing to continue benefits to American citizens.
When the shutdown first began, all that Cooper could bring himself to say about the shutdown crisis wrought by his key political ally, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, “North Carolinians need leader in Washington who can come together to do the basic: lower costs, protect healthcare and help struggling people to get by. Wahington is broken, and we cannot afford to send a DC insider to fix DC’s problem.” Notice that Cooper did not take a position simply ignoring questions about whether he stood with moderate Democrats or Schumer. That’s a career politician move, not the actions of an honest leader.
Throughout the shutdown, Cooper continued to issue vague statements about Americans needing access to affordable healthcare. What Cooper failed to mention is that he championed Obamacare, even while moderate Democrats admitted that it was no longer affordable. Since the launch of his Senate campaign, Cooper has said that healthcare is a key issue, but so far has declined to unveil any concrete policy proposal. On Obamacare, Pelosi famously said, “We have to pass the bill to find out what’s in it.” Cooper seems to believe that North Carolinians should simply vote for him to see what type of Senator he should be.
With the shutdown coming to a close, Cooper continued his unbroken record of issuing meaningless, fact-free statements. Cooper said, “Working families are struggling and any deal that lets health care costs continue to skyrocket is unacceptable. It’s absurd this shutdown ever happened and that Republicans used hungry children as political pawns. Washington needs to do its job and come together on a bill that tackles costs and protects health care for North Carolinians.”
Here are the problems that reality causes for Cooper’s grandiose statement.
First, healthcare costs have been skyrocketing because of Cooper’s cherished Obamacare. Democrats are offering no solutions to fix the core challenges related to health care affordability.
Second, Senate Democrats shut down the government, while Republicans voted to continue funding. That’s what happened. It’s delusional to pretend otherwise. Just like it is accuse Republicans of playing politics with SNAP benefits when Democrats voted en masse against them.
Finally, Cooper has been in an elected office since the Reagan administration, and his refusal to state that they are liabilities with North Carolina voters.
Bottom Line: The shutdown provided a rare opportunity for Cooper to clarify where he stood on the issue and align himself with moderate Democrats who supported keeping the government open. Instead, he issued vague statements as part of his gimmick to pretend to be a moderate, while supporting a radical agenda.
