Former Guilford County Sheriff Calls Of Democrat Shelly Headen To Explain Violent Incidents At Headen’s Home

‍ This week, former Guilford County Sheriff B.J. Barnes called on Shelly Headen, the Democratic nominee for House District 62, to explain two incidents where Guilford Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the Headens’ home. Relevant police records indicate Headen’s spouse made both phone calls to law enforcement. The records show that Headen was accused of “assaulting” and utilizing “personal weapons.”

Former Guilford County Sheriff BJ Barnes offered the following comment: ‍

“As the sheriff of Guilford County for 24 years, I've seen my share of domestic violence issues. They are always tragic and concerning,” said Barnes. “House District 62 candidate Shelly Headen had two different recent incidents in the last two years where law enforcement was called to her home by her husband. The police reports about the incidents involving assault and using weapons have never been addressed by her or her campaign. They should be.”

‍ Barnes continued, “The citizens of District 62 need to know that their representative can not only make laws, but they can abide by them as well. As disturbing as her silence on these matters is, the fact that North Carolina Democratic Party leaders are not questioning this concerning behavior is also troubling.”

Shelly Headen is running in a key battleground district in Guilford County, a key race that will determine control of the North Carolina House of Representatives. Previously, she came under fire for saying, “Why would we take advice from someone who is autistic?” Headen initially agreed to an interview with the Blue Ridge Times about these records, but declined to provide logistical details to facilitate. Additionally, Headen’s major Democratic backers, Governor Josh Stein, House Minority Leader Robert Reives, or Senate Candidate Roy Cooper, have not distanced themselves from her.
