Gov. Stein Issues Emergency Declaration For Communities Impacted by Tropical Storm Chantal
Today, Governor Josh Stein announced a State of Emergency for the 13 counties impacted by Tropical Storm Chantal. In accordance with the North Carolina Emergency Management Act, the order continues to provide state resources for communities affected by severe flooding damage.
“Tropical Storm Chantal cost some of our neighbors their lives and others their livelihood and property. We must do everything we can to support them as they get back on their feet,” said Governor Josh Stein. “This State of Emergency will help get North Carolinians the support they need and enable the state to seek out potential funding to help communities rebuild.”
On July 7th, Tropical Storm Chantal hit central North Carolina, causing the Haw River, Eno River, and Jordan Lake to experience record flood levels. The flooding resulted in substantial damage to public and private property, as well as the closure of main highways.
Since July 5th, the State Emergency Management team has provided:
Search and Rescue Teams, including Swift Water Rescue
Local Emergency Operations Center incident management team personnel
Bottled water deliveries
Specialized personnel to support the restoration of infrastructure
Shower trailers
Water sampling kits
Personal protective equipment
Mobile Event Response Trailer
The State Emergency Team can respond to disasters during the response phase, but now, with the transition to the recovery phase, a formal declaration is needed to continue both state and federal assistance. Analysis is underway to determine the full impact of the storm.
The State of Emergency covers Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Davidson, Durham, Forsyth, Guilford, Lee, Moore, Orange, Person, Randolph, and Wake Counties.
