Liberal Propaganda Outlet Confirms Chief Justice Newby’s Legacy As The Most Consequential Jurist In Modern NC History

Yesterday, the liberal propaganda outlet, ProPublica, published a lengthy feature attacking Republican Chief Justice Paul Newby. The reporter in the article chronicled Newby’s strong record of enacting conservative judicial reforms and tried to frame his faith and decision to adopt children as a “negative.”  

While conservatives wisely refused to engage with this progressive outlet, there are two notable quotes from both sides of the political spectrum that recognize Newby’s impact. 

Senator Thom Tillis, from the center-right said, ““I think Chief Justice Newby has been a great justice. If Democrats are complaining about … what Justice Newby is doing, they ought to look back at what happened when they had the votes to change things.” 

For the left, rapid anti-Trump activists, former Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr said, “Without question, Chief Justice Newby has emerged over the past 20 years as one of the most influential judicial officials. The effect has been that the conservative legislative agenda has been virtually unchecked by the courts, allowing the sweeping implementation of conservative priorities.” 

Here are some of the accomplishments of Newby’s conservative legacy in transforming North Carolina Courts.  

• Similar to Sen. Ted Budd’s first campaign, Newby entered his first race for Supreme Court in 2004 and was successfully re-elected in 2012 and 2020.  

• Then then ProPublica reported that Newby fulfilled his administrative obligations by staffing the Administrative Office of the Courts with individuals ideologically aligned with the conservatives that the voters choose. The liberal activists were apparently horrified at the idea that the Chief Justice would prioritize the voter’s expressed demand. Additionally, Newby worked using his authority to prioritize the way lower courts handled administrative matters, again to enact the expressed will of the voters. 

• Finally, the liberal activists chronicled how the Newby-led Court undid the judicial gerrymander of North Carolina’s Congressional maps. While ProPublica reflected the liberal horror as Newby unwound Democrat’s judicial shenanigans, which were rejected by the voters, overall, the decision mirrors litigation on the federal level.  

The framing exposes how disconnected progressive outlets are from reality: 

• First, the article tries to frame Newby’s faith and religious convictions as some sort of negative. The headline for the hit piece is “God’s Chief Justice” and noted Newby considers himself as “born again Christian.” While these may be foreign concepts for the radical left, which is dominated by atheist Marxist ideology, the vast majority North Carolinians identify as Christians, with a plurality identifying as Baptist. The Billy Graham Library is a top tourist attraction in North Carolina, but ProPublica apparently believes its highly controversial the Newby discusses his beliefs, which are widely shared by his fellow North Carolinians.  

• Second, the article tries to frame Newby’s decision to adopt children as a negative. The progressive activist looks through various court filings and tries to paint a negative one-sided story. But then glosses over the laudable choice to adopt and raise four different children. Normal people understand that positive decision to adopt children and provide them a better home.  

• Finally, the article tries to belittle Newby’s upbringing in a small rural town and tries to credit his success to marrying well. It simply ignores Newby’s career accomplishments, including his rescue of North Carolina’s copy of the Bill of Rights.  

Tim’s Take: All the people close to Newby who declined to speak with this report made the right decision to ignore this liberal hack. Given the unhinged attacks on Newby’s faith and family, it’s obvious that this is not a reasonable individual. In fact, he tried to attend the NCGOP Convention under false pretenses. Every article he has written for ProPublica is simply a hit piece on Republicans. Which is exactly what ProPublica wants as the organization devolves into a left-wing outlet focused on attacking Republicans.
