The North Carolina General Assembly is beginning to consider Senate Bill 1007, Human Trafficking Omnibus, which will be heard in the slated to be heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee with a referral to the Base Budget Committee. The bill primarily sponsored by Senators Alexander, Barns, and Lazzara.
“Human trafficking requires a coordinated, compassionate, and forward-thinking response,” said Senator Alexander. “Human Trafficking is modern day slavery, and putting a stop to this industry of abuse is an ongoing battle, and it is one I will continue fighting in the legislature. I have been incredibly impressed by the work and insight provided by The Harriet Institute throughout the development of this legislation, and I am thankful for their partnership.”
The legislation establishes a statewide human trafficking reporting and response system designed to improve the collection, coordination, and analysis of human trafficking data across North Carolina. It also supports expanded training initiatives and provides funding for establishment of a specialized counter trafficking task force with the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office. The legislation is supported by the Harriet Institute, the Cleveland County Sheriff Office, and various other stakeholders from across North Carolina.
“We are incredibly grateful for Senator Alexander’s leadership and commitment to bringing people together around meaningful solutions,” said Elizabeth Champion, President of The Harriet Institute (https://www.harrietinstitute.org/). “This legislation represents an important step forward in creating stronger systems to identify victims, support survivors, and improve coordination between agencies and communities.”
