NC AFL-CIO Selects Defund The Police Advocate As Next President
Last weekend, the North Carolina State AFL-CIO selected Braxton Winston, a former Charlotte City Counciler and prominent defund the police activists, as the next president at the 68th Annual Convention in Wilmington. Longtime AFL-CIO President MaryBe McMillian announced her plans to retire, creating a leadership vacuum.
Meet Braxton Winston:
Winston rose to political prominent as a defund the police activist, regularly disparaging Charlotte police officers. He served three terms on the Charlotte City Council, including one as the Mayor Pro-Tem. While on Charlotte City’s Council, Winston made headlines for voting against ammunition for Charlotte police officers and avoiding service for child support payments.
In 2024, Braxton ran for Labor Commissioner on a platform of expanding unionization and brining back COVID-19 restrictions. He lost to Republican Labor Commissioner Luke Farley.
Now Winston will serve as the President of the NC AFL-CIO effectively making him the voice of organized labor in North Carolina. He plans to continue promoting unionization efforts across North Carolina.
Tim’s Take: While organized labor and Republicans are becoming closer in some parts of the country, in North Carolina, unions remain a firm part of the far-left. North Carolina remains one of the least unionized states in the country, and historically unions have always played a role in supporting the far-left. Winston’s selection as president confirms that they plan to continue to oppose all Republicans instead of an America First and North Carolina First policy agenda.
