North Carolina eCourts Mark Milestone With Ten Million eFilings
This week, the North Carolina Judicial Branch announced the processing of the 10 millionth electronic filing. The milestone reflects the scale of Branch’s digital public services that was implemented in all 100 counties between February 2023 and October 2025. Online services provides the primary infrastructure of the state court system; before this system several legal actions required travel and in-person appearances throughout the business day.
“Ten million eFilings is more than a metric – it is an important milestone that signals that online services have a positive impact on the lives of North Carolinians today and into the future,” said Chief Justice Paul Newby. “Our state’s growing population benefits when courts are designed to serve the needs of the people. E-filing allows us to better meet our constitutional mandate that the courts shall be open.”
The system includes Guide & File, a free tool that provides step-by-step support to draft and file common legal actions. Public users conduct nearly 7 million monthly searches for court records and information using Portal.
Additionally, the new technology is used by law enforcement across North Carolina. The Judicial Branch supports over 47,000 active who now have 24/7 access to the Branch’s eWarrant and Enforcement Mobile applications. The system allows law enforcement agencies to issue citations, serve orders for arrest, and execute warrants.
As the Blue Ridge Times has previously reported, the eCourts infrastructure provides the foundation for a new partnership with public libraries across North Carolina. This program provides access to the Court system at local libraries, increasing access to the justice system.
