Republican National Committee and North Carolina Republican Party Announce Settlement To Address Noncitizen Voting Identified Through Jury Duty Process

This week, the Republican National Committee and North Carolina Republican party submitted a proposed consent judgement in their lawsuit requiring the State Board of Elections to comply with the law. The law says that individuals who except themselves from jury duty because they are not citizens should also be removed from the voter roles because they admitted to not being citizens.

The file settlement must still be approved by a judge, but RNC, NCGOP, and State Board have all agreed to a settlement. Two liberal groups, who intervened in the lawsuit, opposed the settlement.

Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Joe Gruters released the following statement:

“North Carolina Democrats are illegally trying to pad voter rolls with people who are not citizens,” said Chairman Gruters. “It is straightforward: if someone admits they are not a citizen when they are considered for jury duty, that same information should be used to ensure they are not registered to vote. Election officials have a clear responsibility to uphold the law, and the RNC is taking action to make sure that non-citizens are removed from North Carolina’s voter rolls.”

This is one key step in identifying and removing noncitizens from North Carolina’s voter rolls.
