State Auditor’s Reports Highlights Baptist On Mission Massive Contribution To Help Western North Carolina Recover From Helene
Today, the North Carolina Office of State Auditor released a clean audit of Baptist on Mission’s (BOM) management of funds to help Western North Carolina rebuild after Hurricane Helene. The auditor’s reports shows that $3 million in grant money was used to support hundreds of projects to assist with Helene Recovery.
“It’s exciting as State Auditor to tell a success story. Baptists on Mission met people in Western North Carolina where they needed to be met, and did so with a sense of urgency,” said State Auditor Dave Boliek. “They were able to leverage public dollars to complete hundreds of individual projects, and effectively managed volunteers all throughout the Western North Carolina region. This combination of public funds and focused motivation allows for the type of return on investment that should be replicated moving forward.”
Here are some key takeaways from the report:
“BOM effectively reduced per-repair project costs by utilizing volunteer labor, securing disaster relief discounts from retailers, and bulk purchasing building materials.”
“From February 2025 through October 2025, BOM completed 472 projects (an average of 1.87 repairs of individual residences per day), with the average expenditure from grant funds being $6,392 per home.”
“Working in coordination with North Carolina Emergency Management, the American Red Cross, and the Salvation Army, BOM deployed over 30,000 trained volunteers across affected counties.”
“The organization provided approximately 500,000 hot meals through its mass-feeding units, operated mobile shower and laundry facilities, and delivered childcare services for displaced families.”
“Beyond immediate relief, BOM completed more than 5,000 home repairs related to mold prevention and structural stabilization, ensuring that rebuilt homes were safe for long-term habitation.”
