Top Roy Cooper Surrogate Suggests That Senate Republicans Should Eliminate The Filibuster To End the Schumer Shutdown

In one of her many late night X posts, North Carolina Democrat Party Chair, Anderson Clayton, boldly suggested that Senate Republicans should eliminate the filibuster to end the Schumer Shutdown. Clayton regularly demands that Republicans reopen the government, despite the fact that Republicans voted for the continuing resolution to keep the government open and Senate Democrats voted against it, preventing the passage of the bill.  In her late-night post, she said “the republicans have a trifecta. They are literally doing ANYTHIN they want right now in Congress. End the filibuster – Republicans could do it any day girl!”

The legislative filibusters requires 60 votes in the United State’s Senate to close debate on legislation, providing a key protection for the minority. Right now, it is effectively the only mechanism that empowers Congressional Democrats to compel any negotiations with Republicans. But Clayton understands that Senate Democrats need to appease their radical base, so she wants Republicans to remove the filibuster, which would relieve the political pressure of Democrats, because they would no longer have any meaningful say in the legislative process.

Since the beginning of the shutdown, Senate Candidate, former Governor Roy Cooper, has refused to state his position Schumer’s decision to shut the government down, dodging simple yes or no questions. Instead, his team posts platitudes about a broken Washington, while offering no solutions. Cooper’s team did not respond to request for comment on the filibuster.

Ending the filibuster has long been a goal of progressive activists, including Clayton, to enact a left-wing agenda that lacks broad popular support. In 2022, Sen. Manchin and Sinema broke party ranks and worked with Republicans to save the filibuster; they were then forced out of the Democrat Party. Generally speaking, eliminating the filibuster would clear the way for Democrats to pack the Supreme Court with partisan hacks, enact a radical climate agenda that would crash the American economy, and enact voting laws that would make it nearly impossible for Republicans to win. The country would face significantly deep divisions if the filibuster was completely eliminated.
