Whatley Calls For Congressional Stock Trading Ban
This week, Republican Senate Candidate Michael Whatley officially announced his support for a full ban on congressional stock trading.
“Americans are sick of corrupt politicians like Roy Cooper who spend their entire careers living off the taxpayer dime with nothing meaningful to show in return,” said Michael Whatley. “It’s not enough that career politicians like Cooper get elected, fail to serve their citizens, and stay in office with little to show for it — some Members of Congress also enrich themselves by trading individual stocks while making decisions that directly impact the economy and financial markets. It’s a conflict of interest — plain and simple.”
Notably, Whatley called for a “full” congressional stock trading ban, something that former Governor Roy Cooper, the likely Democrat nominee, declined to do. Additionally, Cooper declined to highlight the stock trading habits of his key ally, Speaker Emeritus Rep. Nancy Pelosi, who continues to highlight this problem.
“Public service should never be about personal profit,” Whatley continued. “If you’re elected to serve, your duty is to the voters and not your portfolio. I support legislation requiring Members of Congress and their families to divest individual stocks or place assets in qualified blind trusts.”
