After decades as a partisan warrior, Cooper utilizes moderate rhetoric in Senate run

During his run for Senate, the Democrat nominee, former Governor Roy Cooper is trying to rhetorically position himself as a “moderate.” On a podcast, Cooper recently asserted, “It’s more of a we thing for one. ...Leaders ...told me you ought to try to stand in another person’s shoes...I don’t believe that we’re as divided ...as a lot of leaders want us to be… A lot of people are yearning for decency...when it comes time for policy, we all need to find a way toward consensus."

This pivot toward moderation comes after Cooper spent years calling Republicans “extremist.” For example, in July 11th, 2024, speaking at a Kamala Harris rally, Cooper said, “we must stop Donald Trump’s dark vision for America” and “You know, Donald Trump threatens our Democracy and wants to make history by installing himself as a dictator on day one.” And on July 3rd, 2024, he signed onto a statement that said, “Donald Trump is an existential threat to our democracy, and everyone in the room agreed that defeating him is an imperative.” President Trump faced an assassination attempt at Butler, PA, on July 13th, 2024.

“Roy Cooper’s calls for violence against President Trump is the same dangerous rhetoric Democrats have pushed for years while trying to demonize their political opponents, leading to assassinations and increased political violence. Cooper should own up for his role in raising the temperature,” said RNC Spokeswoman Emma Hall.

In addition to his reckless rhetoric, Cooper has a long record flighting Republicans on common sense legislation and enacting a liberal agenda through the Governor’s Mansion.

  • Refusing to condemn Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro despite Maduro’s regime being responsible for the deaths of Americans

  • Issuing over 100 vetoes, the most in North Carolina history, including:

  • Legislation to strengthen cooperation between law enforcement and ICE

  • Legislation to keep biological men out of women’s sports and locker rooms

  • Legislation to stop dangerous and permanent gender mutilation surgeries on kids

  • Legislation requiring voter ID to vote in elections and removing illegals from North Carolina’s voter rolls

  • Said one of his major "accomplishments" was the creation of a "racial equity" task force that pushed to eliminate cash bail for certain crimes

  • Cutting a deal to release 3,500 criminals early from North Carolina prisons, including murderers, child rapists, and 51 inmates serving life sentences

  • Overseeing the release of nearly 500 illegal immigrants from North Carolina jails.
