Buncombe County Awarded $1.9 Million Grant For Sports Park Expansion

The Buncombe County Parks & Recreation received a $1.9 million grant from the Tourism Development (TDA) for the second phase of the Enka Recreation Destination. So far, the project has received $12.7 million from the Tourism Product Development Fund, making this the second largest investment in a single facility.

The Enka Recreation Destination creates a dynamic recreation, sports and greenway destination. This facility has tournament-quality baseball and soccer fields, creating connectivity between surrounding amenities and the Buncombe County Sports Park, which welcomes 1.4 million visitors annually.

Phase II of the project is expected to be completed by June 2027. The Enka Recreation Destination Phase I, which includes the Enka Heritage Trail, is still in progress. Learn more about the trail here.

This new award and previous TPDF investments will be used to:

  • Add an ADA-compliant walking path.

  • Replace BCSP’s outdated playground with a universal playground that will allow people of all abilities to participate.

  • Renovate the existing shelter into a lighted pavilion.

  • Turf and light multiple fields.

  • Restore the park ranger office and contact station.

  • Complete resiliency improvements throughout BCSP.
