City of Asheville Announces Opening of Muni Disc Golf Course on August 1st
The City of Asheville announced that August 1st as the opening date for the Muni Disc Golf Course. Back in 2020, the Asheville Municipal Golf Course teamed with professional disc golf player Chris Dickerson to design a championship-length, 18-hole disc golf course that utilizes the front nine area of Asheville’s Golf Course. The par 61 course will feature two tee pad placements per hole, with the blue layout measuring over 8,000 feet and the red layout measuring over 6,500 feet. Designed with input from Dickerson and City staff, the course will be a temporary activation of the space until golf course restoration begins.
Helene damaged the front nine of the Municipal Golf Course. After months of recovery work, the property has been transformed into WNC’s newest premier disc golf course. The grand opening will be held on August 1st at 9:00 am.
“By converting the damaged areas of the golf course into this temporary activation, we hope to draw locals and visitors back to the site,” said Chris Corl, City of Asheville’s Director of the Department of Community & Regional Entertainment Facilities. “The damage from Helene devastated this property from a golf standpoint. This project is our way of transforming that destruction into an interim recreational space for our community while we work through the process of initiating the restoration to return golf to the site. Disc golf is a low-impact sport that complements the Muni’s existing rolling open spaces, flora, and wildlife.”
