Democrat Gov. Stein Vetoes School Choice Legislation
Yesterday, Governor Josh Stein (D) vetoed House Bill 87, “Educational Choice for Children Act,” which would ensure that North Carolina families could participate in the federal tax credit program outlined in President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act if they donate to certain nonprofits that provide scholarships to students.
In a convoluted statement, Stein said, “School choice is good for students and parents,” but “HB87 is unnecessary, and I vetoed it.”
In response, North Carolina Senate Leader Phil Berger said, “Either you support school choice, or you don’t. Gov. Stein could have made North Carolina a leader in school choice and parental freedom by signing the Educational Choice for Children Act, but instead, he’s attempting to usurp the General Assembly’s authority to set tax policy. I look forward to holding Gov. Stein accountable and overriding his veto to ensure North Carolina can participate in President Trump’s signature school choice initiative.”
The legislation passed the North Carolina House and Senate with enough bipartisan support to override Stein’s veto. When the General Assembly reconvenes, they will likely override his veto.
Additionally, Stein signed House Bill 125, which provides stop-gap funding for certain state programs, while the legislature works out a budget compromise.
