Governor Stein Vetoes Legislation That Cracks Down on Illegal Immigration

In a Friday night news dump, Governor Stein vetoed House Bill 318, The Criminal Illegal Alien Enforcement Act, and Senate Bill 153, North Carolina Border Protection Act, both of these pieces of legislation directly address the impact of criminal illegal immigration in North Carolina. This decision comes as Stein faced protests by liberal activists and open border groups outside of his residences, demanding that he stand with them. In contrast, North Carolina law enforcement groups said this legislation was an important step to better protect the Tar Heel state.

The legislation now heads back to the General Assembly, where North Carolina Republicans will try to override his veto. Republicans have a supermajority in the Senate and are one vote shy in the House. Speaker Hall and Republican leadership have shown the ability to convince at least one Democrat to join Republicans to pass common-sense legislation.

What They Are Saying:

  • Speaker Destin Hall said, “Gov. Stein has made one thing clear today: he stands with criminals illegal aliens and the most radical elements of his party’s base over the safety and security of North Carolinians. Make no mistake, the NC House will override the Governor’s veto at the earliest opportunity.”

  • Senate Leader Phil Berger said, “Today, Gov. Stein proved where his allegiances are. He’d rather prioritize his far-left donors and their dangerous open-border policies over the citizens of North Carolina who are desperately pleading for us to put an end to the illegal immigration crisis. I look forward to the Senate overriding his veto.”

  • Progressive Group, El Pueblo said, “El Pueblo applauds Governor Josh Stein’s decision to stand with North Carolina’s immigrant community and veto anti-immigrant bills HB318 and SB153, which would cause enormous harm to immigrants living in the state, but also to the state’s economy and security.” (Note: the legislation only addressed individuals here illegally)
