NC Democrat Leaders Side With LA Rioters Against Law Enforcement

Across North Carolina, Democrats and their progressive allies are hosting protests to show their solidarity with the rioters in Los Angeles.

Situation in Los Angeles

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers began executing warrants to arrest illegal aliens across the Los Angeles area. Individuals began to actively impede this legal process, leading to unrest across the area. After riots broke out, President Trump activated the National Guard and Marines to secure federal property and quell the riots.

North Carolina Democrats respond:

The North Carolina SEIU leaders held a protest in downtown Raleigh to highlight their concerns over the arrest of SEIU California Leader David Huerta. Huerta was released today on bond and is facing charges related to “conspiracy to impede an officer.”

  • North Carolina Democrat Party Chair Anderson Clayton actively promoted this protest and encouraged North Carolinians to resist the Trump administration.

  • North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) Tamika Walker Kelly spoke at the rally, accusing ICE of “terrorizing” communities and calling for the protestors to show “boundless” solidarity with the rioters in LA. The NCAE is a key player in the NC Democrat Party, shaping primary elections on the left.

In Asheville, progressive activists held a protest to stand with the rioters in Los Angeles and call for the abolition of ICE. These protestors largely remained peaceful and waved a variety of flags, including the Mexican flag. It should be noted that both the protest in Raleigh and Asheville were hosted by the SEIU.

Finally, Governor Josh Stein joined fellow progressive Governors in denouncing President Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard to stop the riots.

So far, Democrats from Buncombe County’s delegation, including Sen. Julie Mayfield and Rep. Lindsey Prather, have not publicly commented on the national situation. However, today, they voted against legislation that would reduce the impact of illegal immigration.

Big Question: If these violent anti-ICE riots emerge in North Carolina, will Gov. Josh Stein and Attorney General Jeff Jackson enforce the law or side with their progressive allies? Back in 2016, Gov. Pat McCrory deployed the National Guard to quell riots in Charlotte before things got out of hand. In 2020, Governor Roy Cooper and Attorney General Josh Stein declined to take strong action during the height of the George Floyd riots, resulting in millions of dollars in property damage.
