NY Post Reports That Over 600 Prisoners Released Early By Cooper Face Charges For Serious Crimes, including 18 For Murder
A new bombshell report from the New York Post provides reports that from the mass release of at least 3,500 inmates from the appeasement settlement signed by the Cooper administration and his liberal allies. “The Post found more than 600 of those later committed serious felonies like homicides, sex offenses, or other violent crimes. A staggering 18 of the prisoners released have been charged with murder in the four years since.”
This should come as little surprise since the North Carolina Sentencing and Policy Advisory Commission found in 2024 that recidivism rates for the prisoners released early were 48%, which is substantially higher than the rate of prisoners released on normal sentencing guidelines.
The brutal murder of Iryna Zarutska on the Charlotte light rail put the spotlight on Democrat Senate Candidate, former Governor Roy Cooper’s soft-on-crime record. Last February, Fox News reported DeCarlos Brown Jr was directly tied to the early release of at least 3,500 inmates as part of a settlement between the Cooper administration and his liberal allies. At the time, Cooper’s team asserted, despite the evidence, that Cooper worked to keep criminals behind bars. The latest revelation from the New York Post yet again undermines these claims.
“Nineteen innocent North Carolinians are dead because Roy Cooper chose to let violent criminals walk free,” said Republican Senate candidate Michael Whatley. “This was a deliberate, reckless choice that prioritized violent criminals ahead of innocent North Carolinians. Roy Cooper failed at his most basic duty as governor, protecting the people of North Carolina.”
In addition to the 18 murder charges, the Post reports over 80 individuals released early by Cooper later charged with sex crimes, including indecent liberty with a child.
“Roy Cooper cut a backroom deal with activist groups to release murderers, rapists, pedophiles, and inmates serving life sentences. Because this soft-on-crime lunatic let monsters go free, innocent North Carolinians paid the price. Cooper has blood on his hands,” said RNC Spokeswoman Emma Hall.
This list has been public since early February 2026. Several North Carolina legacy outlets employ multiple reporters who could have easily devoted the time and resources to researching this list. But apparently, WRAL, News & Observer, Asheville Watchdog, and the NC Assembly do not want to report to their readers about the public safety failures of their preferred Senate candidate.
