Roy Cooper Refuses To Condemn Political Ally In U.S. Senate Who Cheered On Iran With Disputed Report
Yesterday, Democrat Senator Chris Murphy posted on X that it was, quote, “awesome” that several Iranian ships allegedly slipped past the United States naval blockade of Iran. Murphy is rumored to be leading an effort to oust Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer for failing to lead on progressive issues and a supporter of Cooper’s Senate campaign. When asked about the post from Murphy, Governor Cooper’s team declined to comment.
“If radical Roy Cooper won't denounce Sen. Murphy's cheerleading of the Iranian regime, why would North Carolinians trust him to look out for their interests in the U.S. Senate? He is making clear his priority is standing with the Washington Democrats who are blinded by their hatred of President Trump and now are openly cheering for a regime that's killed thousands of Americans over 47 years,” said NCGOP Communications Director Matt Mercer.
Murphy’s cheering on of Iran is even more concerning, considering that the report in question is disputed. The post, elevated by Murphy, originated with an analyst with deep ties to Iran’s influence operation in the United States. Additionally, Fox News says that sources in the region say that there is “no evidence” to support these claims. Additionally, the United States Armed Forces says that they have turned back over 28 ships as they implement this blockade.
“Disgusting. A Senate Democrat reacting with ‘awesome’ to reports that Iranian ships slipped past a U.S. presence in the Gulf of Oman isn’t just tone-deaf—it undermines American strength and sends the wrong message to our adversaries. Does Roy Cooper agree with Christ Murphy, or will he condemn this kind of anti-American rhetoric? The people of North Carolina deserve an answer,” said Whatley Campaign Spokesman DJ Griffin.
Cooper may be reluctant to condemn Murphy given the political situation among Senate Democrats. Behind the scenes its rumored that Murphy is trying to position himself as the next leader of Senate Democrats. If Cooper condemns Murphy and aligns himself with Schumer, it may depress donations from the out-of-state progressives he needs to be competitive.
"Roy Cooper is a yes to the left, so it's no surprise he's refusing to condemn his fellow Democrat for cheering on a fanatical terrorist regime that wants to kill Americans and wipe Israel off the face of the planet. Cooper is too weak to stand up to the pro-terrorist radical left," said NRSC Regional Press Secretary Nick Puglia.
