UNC-Chapel Hill announces campus expansion plans
This week, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill announced the development of a new campus extension at Carolina North, calling it a generational investment in its academic mission, public impact, and shared future with the Town of Chapel Hill. UNC-Chapel Hill plans to develop a roughly 230-acre learn-live-work-plan footprint within Carolin North on and around the former site of Horace Williams Airport. This will be the largest expansion of the University since the cornerstone of the Old East building was laid in 1793, over 232 years ago.
The University believes the new campus will enable multidisciplinary collaboration in field such as health, artificial intelligence and advanced technology. Groundbreaking is expected to being in the summer of 2027 once the plot is prepared for its initial development phase.
The new place will expand the academic footprint of UNC Chapel Hill and provide a new engine of innovation for Carolina research and biomedical engineering. Additionally, the new campus will increase its connection to the bus mass transit system.
