Undercover Video Shows UNC Wilmington Administrators Defying DEI Ban
Yesterday, Accuracy in Media released a new undercover video that shows administrators at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) explaining how the school avoids the UNC Board of Governors ban on DEI throughout the system.
In the video, Asher Persin, UNCW’s Mohin-Scholz LGBTQIA Center Coordinator, openly admits that the university is “trying to be a little sneaky” about implementing DEI-based programming. Ashlee Fleming, Upperman African American Cultural Center Coordinator, admits that “it says ‘eliminated’ in a lot of the reports, but if you look at the other pages, it shows that they kind of just created new-ish positions.” She goes on to clarify that the eleven eliminated positions were just “technically replaced.”
Last year, the UNC Board of Governors voted to eliminate DEI office and DEI-related spending throughout the entire UNC system. But Accuracy in Media’s investigation revealed that administrators at UNC Charlotte, UNC Asheville, Western Carolina University, and now UNC Wilmington explained how DEI was continuing.
“Our investigation proves that UNCW only disbanded its Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion on paper. In reality, they simply moved employees around and renamed programs to continue conducting the exact same radical indoctrination that the UNC Board of Governors disavowed,” said AIM President Adam Guillette. “Persin and Fleming are acting like the rules don’t apply to them, and unless the Administration at UNC Wilmington takes immediate action, they might be correct.”
In his interview with the Blue Ridge Times, Guillette indicated that his organization has conducted several investigations across North Carolina. Additionally, AIM set up a website www.SaveNCSchools.com, which allows concerned citizens to contact the board of Governors about the violations of DEI policy.
In response to AIM’s reporting, UNC Wilmington Chancellor sent out a letter warning faculty about the potential for more videos to be released and reminded employees about the University’s equity policy.
