Asheville City Council Member Kim Roney Announces Campaign for Mayor
This weekend, Asheville City Council Member Kim Roney announced her campaign for Asheville Mayor. The next mayoral election is scheduled for 2026.
Roney has served on the City Council since 2020 and works as a musician and piano teacher. She attended UNC Asheville and ran for mayor in 2022. Asheville’s current mayor, Ester Manheimer, defeated Roney, 53.43% to 45.52%, with the other three candidates receiving less than 1% of the vote.
Roney is one of the most progressive voices on the Asheville City Council and was proudly endorsed by the Asheville Democrat Socialists of America.
Predictably, Roney holds to a radical agenda, here are the top points.
In 2022, Roney was the leading voice in favor of defunding the police and voted against funding for bulletproof vest for Asheville police officers.
Roney continues to push an agenda focused on climate change and LGBTQIA+ rights, over other priorities like creating jobs and lowering taxes.
Finally, Roney continues to decline to say the pledge of alliance at city council meetings.
Tim’s Take: This midterm could be the year that radical socialist like Roney secures the mayorship of Asheville. Given the historic trends in midterm elections, Democrat activists will comprise a greater share of the electorate giving Roney an edge compared to last time.
