After Voting Against Legislation To Cut Taxes And Lower Costs, Davis Changes Rhetoric Ahead Of Election

Democrat Don Davis is one of the most vulnerable House Democrats running for re-election in one of the most competitive districts in the country. As the midterm elections draw closer, Davis  signed the “Promise to America” pledge, which “ focuses on lowering everyday costs, supporting agriculture, strengthening border security and assisting law enforcement.” Navigate to Davis’s website, and you’ll find his claim to “[work] across the aisle on efforts to… expand access to health care.” 

However, recent claims stand in contrast to his voting record in Washington and Raleigh.  

In 2025, Davis voted for the biggest middle-class tax increase in American history. If the Working Families Tax Cuts hadn’t passed, an NC-01 family of 4 making the median income would’ve experienced a $1,271 tax increase. The bill also contained historic new relief tax policies, including no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and Social Security tax relief for seniors.

Additionally, Davis voted against numerous policies uniquely benefiting North Carolina farmers, including a permanent extension of the pass-through small business deduction and permanent death tax relief. Davis voted against establishing the Rural Health Transformation Fund, a historic investment in America’s rural hospitals and clinics. In December, the Trump Administration announced North Carolina would receive $213 million from the program.  

Following President Joe Biden’s lead, in 2023, Davis voted to supercharge the IRS to go after families and small businesses. He also  voted against lowering Americans’ energy costs and reestablishing American energy dominance. Davis was slammed earlier this year for voting against $305 billion in border security funding throughout his 3 and a half years in Congress, as Davis continues to support Border policy aligned with Biden not President Trump.  

During his time in the State Senate, Davis voted against a state constitutional amendment for a state constitutional amendment that would have lowered the state income tax cap from ten percent to seven percent. Voters passed this amendment 57.35%-42.65%. In 2019, Davis  voted to sustain Governor Cooper’s veto of the 2019 North Carolina State Budget that would have invested over $200 million into Davis's Senate district.
