Ex-wife asks Court to determine if William Barber used nonprofit funds for alimony

Rececca Barber, the former wife of 34 years to William Barber II, filed a motion in divorce court to have a judge examine whether or not William Barber misused nonprofit funds to pay alimony. They reached the final divorce settlement in November 2024; however, the new complaint alleges that William Barber was not completely honest in reaching this agreement.

Here are some key allegations from the complaint filed by his ex-wife:

  • The complaint notes that William Barber is the President of Repairs of the Breach and that he has discretion over several accounts with substantial assets, and highlights that the nonprofit is funded through private donations, public funding, and government grants. During the marriage, the ex-wife says that Repairs of the Breach “frequently assisted” with managing marital assets and expenses.

  • The complaint claims that William Barber temporarily resided with a female employee of his organization during 2020.

  • The lawsuit alleges that Barber authorized Repairs of the Breach to transfer $7,000 to a joint personal checking account under the guise of alimony or financial support.

    • The ex-wife claims that Barber has de facto control over the nonprofit’s accounts and that he uses the nonprofit as a financial instrument to conduct his personal financial affairs.

  • The complaint notes that Barber’s current wife is also an employee of Repairers of the Breach, further enmeshing William Barber’s finances with the nonprofit.

The complaint then outlines a long list of examples showing how William Barber’s finances are commingled with the nonprofit.

William Barber denied the allegations made in the complaint and filed a motion to have it dismissed.

Tim’s Take: Coverage of William Barber serves as a perfect example of how legacy media outlets treat conservatives and progressives differently. While working to hold Democrats accountable, I have personally attended several protests and observed how William Barber would exit his luxury car, driven by a driver, to lead the Poor People’s Campaign. He is the definition of a limousine liberal. Living a life of luxury to complain, while claiming to be a champion for the poor by advocating for policies that would limit economic growth, further entrapping Americans in generational poverty.

However, legacy North Carolina media declined to cover his rank hypocrisy and instead pretended that he is some type of civil rights icon. Here is what the media would do if a conservative minister faced a similar complaint.

  • The media would go out of its way to highlight the substantial allegations of marital infidelity.

  • The media would point out the ethical problems of engaging in an affair with an employee and the issues raised by having one’s spouse on staff.

  • Finally, the media would ask large donors, foundations, and possibly government agencies that support the nonprofit if they plan to claw back donations, or if they would at least pause donations until the matter is fully investigated.

But since Barber is a progressive icon, the legacy media continues to paint him a civil rights hero and does its best to downplay the serious allegations against him.
